Art Trail -
Friday 17th - Sunday 19th May
‘pART of Pontypridd’ is an annual Art Trail taking place across the town centre of Pontypridd and Ynysangharad Park by myself and my graduates from the BA (Hons) Creative and Therapeutic Arts course at the University of South Wales. With thanks to Pontypridd Town Council, Your Pontypridd Business Improvement District, Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council we are delighted to be exhibiting a wealth of creative work this year on the 17th-19th of May 2024.
Through the creation of an Art Trail, we seek to honour and celebrate the wonderful relationships cultivated with venues, businesses and organisations across our town who inspire the artwork we create. As the Community Artists, Participatory Artists and Socially Engaged Arts Practitioners of the future, we will be exhibiting artwork that has engaged or has been informed by the community of Pontypridd, or invites participation from the public once displayed. The exhibition not only showcases our work as artists, but also demonstrates our passion for supporting our community’s wellbeing, our ability to form meaningful connections, in addition to the community’s resilience during challenging times.
The trail will also incorporate a range of access resources, from photographs, soundscapes, flip books and more! We believe it is the most current and relevant way for us to showcase our skills,
Initial Ideas
I am thrilled to announce my initial ideas for the upcoming project: crafting a stunning mural for the wall leading to the entrance of Pontypridd's market. Inspired by the rich folklore surrounding the River Taff, my vision for this mural revolves around the captivating tales of a colossal serpent believed to dwell beneath its waters.
In an exciting collaboration with a local school, I'll be engaging students in the creative process, inviting them to envision their own mythical creatures inhabiting the depths of the Taff. Together, we'll utilize natural, locally sourced materials, perhaps even embarking on a group expedition to gather treasures from the riverbanks. Transforming their imaginative creations into paste-ups, using an eco-friendly adhesive.
As for the mural itself, I'm considering either painting an abstract depiction of the river or working closely with the students to craft individual sections that together form a panorama. Every contribution will be carefully integrated into the collective masterpiece, resulting in a beautiful communal work of art.
