Arts in Health - Llandough Hospital

Conducting a group workshop at Llandough Hospital with dementia patients as part of my university course was a profoundly enriching experience. The focus of the project was about the use of art and creativity as a means to relax, communicate, divert, learn skills as well as offer chances to be heard and break down stigma. Recognizing the diverse range of abilities and challenges associated with dementia, we established a safe and open space for both students and residents to engage in meaningful conversations and artistic exploration. Through the use of various materials that sparked sensory stimulation, we fostered connections and facilitated dialogue. The workshop, also designed as a celebration of the 75 years of the NHS, allowed us to create an activity that could be left on the ward, enabling residents to regularly engage in creative expression, providing a lasting source of inspiration and interaction within the healthcare setting.

Response Artwork

“A soft touch” is a piece inspired by a conversation with a lady about the different colours she used to dye her hair.  The hanging pieces of wool create the appearance of strands of hair, as well as an opportunity for you to sensorily engage with the work. The artwork explores a variety of textures and colours that represent and encourage differences within everyone, outside and inside the NHS. The softness of the wool is also a resemblance of the care and support many have received from the NHS; This piece is a celebration of the similarities, differences and connections we share.
